The First 48 Hours After Awake Liposuction

In a nutshell: The first two days after awake liposuction call for a simple routine: walk gently but often, rest well, keep the small entry point clean and dry, drink plenty of water and follow the clinic's instructions on showering and medicines. Avoid alcohol, smoking, saunas, baths and strenuous exercise. Because you were awake and only locally numbed, most people walk out of the clinic the same day, but mild swelling, tenderness, bruising and some fluid leakage are still normal.

Awake liposuction, such as LAMS (Local Anesthetic Minimal-Invasive Liposuction), is designed for a shorter recovery than conventional liposuction, which sometimes leads people to treat the first 48 hours like any other part of their trip. This guide sets out what to expect and what to do, hour by hour, so you can make the most of that shorter recovery without setting it back.

Why does being awake during liposuction change the first 48 hours?

365mc introduced LAMS in 2014. Only the treatment area is numbed, and the procedure has three stages: loosening fibrous bands in the fat, drawing fat out through a very fine cannula, and applying a dissolving solution to help clear what remains nearby.

Because there is no general anaesthesia and only a small entry point, you avoid the grogginess of sedation, and no compression garment is required. However, fat has still been removed and the tissue still needs to heal. The LAMS page explains the procedure in full.

The first few hours: leaving the clinic

  • Expect numbness. The local anaesthetic wears off gradually over several hours, and the area may then feel sore or tight.
  • Expect some leakage. Fluid used during treatment may seep from the entry point, sometimes tinged pink. A dressing or pad absorbs it.
  • Travel simply. A taxi back to your hotel is easier than public transport with stairs and crowds.
  • Eat and drink. Have a light meal and water once you are settled.
  • Check your instructions. Make sure you know when to change the dressing, when you may shower and who to contact if you have questions.

The first evening and night

  • Take any pain relief exactly as the clinic advised; do not add other painkillers or supplements without checking, as some can increase bruising.
  • Protect bedding with a towel in case of overnight leakage.
  • Sleep in a comfortable position that avoids heavy pressure on the treated area.
  • Keep water by the bed.
  • Get up to walk briefly if you wake during the night and feel able.

Day one and day two: gentle activity

What is encouraged

  • Short walks several times a day to support circulation and help swelling settle.
  • Light daily tasks such as short errands, gentle sightseeing nearby or desk-based work if you feel comfortable.
  • Hydration and balanced meals, with salt kept moderate.
  • Attending any scheduled check-up or aftercare, such as shockwave therapy (ESWT) used for LAMS patients at 365mc.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol and smoking, which can increase bruising and slow healing.
  • Saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, swimming pools and the sea, until the entry point has healed.
  • Gym workouts, running and heavy lifting.
  • Long days of walking, which can increase swelling even if you feel well.
  • Heat pads or massage on the area unless the clinic has advised it.

The return to work and exercise guide explains how activity usually builds up after this point.

Caring for the entry point

The entry point is small, but it is still a wound. Keep it clean and dry, change the dressing as instructed and avoid picking at any scab. Wash your hands before touching the area. Showering is usually allowed after a short period; your clinic will tell you when, and how to dry and redress the site. The guide on minimal-bruise liposuction also covers how technique and aftercare influence bruising.

What is normal, and when should you contact the clinic?

Usually normal in the first 48 hours

  • Tenderness or a sore, bruised feeling, especially when pressing the area.
  • Mild swelling and some bruising, which may become more visible on day two.
  • Light fluid leakage that slows over the first day or so.
  • Patchy numbness or tingling over the treated area.
  • Mild tiredness.

Many people are surprised that they feel well enough to go out within hours. Feeling good is a positive sign, but it is not a signal to skip the precautions; swelling often shows up later in the day or the next morning, particularly after a lot of walking.

Contact your clinic if you notice

  • Bleeding that soaks through dressings repeatedly or does not slow with gentle pressure.
  • Rapidly increasing swelling, especially if tense or painful.
  • Fever, chills, spreading redness or discharge that is cloudy or smells.
  • Pain that worsens rather than improves.
  • Dizziness, fainting or palpitations.

Seek emergency care for chest pain, sudden breathlessness or calf pain and swelling on one side. These are uncommon but important to recognise. The safety and risks page has more detail.

Planning your trip around the first 48 hours

  • Keep the first two days light. Book shopping trips, tours and day excursions for later in your stay, and pack loose clothing that will not press on the treated area.
  • Plan simple meals. Note nearby restaurants or delivery options so you do not need to travel far for food, and keep water in your room.
  • Stay nearby. Accommodation close to the clinic makes check-ups easy.
  • Do not fly immediately. Ask your doctor when it is suitable to fly; even after LAMS, a short buffer is sensible.
  • Save your coordinator's contact. If something worries you, a message and a photo to your coordinator is usually the quickest way to get an answer.
  • Keep your passport handy. Eligible cosmetic procedure fees may qualify for a tax refund, which can be processed at the hospital kiosk or at Incheon Airport.

Other questions worth asking

Can I go back to my hotel straight after LAMS?

Yes, most people leave the clinic the same day once the team is satisfied. A taxi is usually the most comfortable option.

Do I need a compression garment after LAMS?

No. A compression garment is not required for LAMS, although you will still have a dressing over the entry point.

Can I work the day after LAMS?

Many people can manage light, desk-based work soon after LAMS. Physically demanding work may need more time; ask your doctor.

When can I shower after LAMS?

Usually after a short period, as instructed by your clinic. Avoid soaking in baths or pools until the entry point has healed.

Is it normal for the area to leak fluid?

Yes, light leakage of treatment fluid is common in the first day or so and usually slows quickly. Heavy or persistent bleeding needs review.

If you are planning awake liposuction and want to know how the first two days would fit around your trip, you can plan your LAMS days with a coordinator and have a video consultation with a doctor first.

What you have read is general information, not medical advice. Early recovery after LAMS varies, and whether it suits you is decided by a doctor in an in-person examination.
